Should I Go For It?

I Took The Handmade Pledge! BuyHandmade.org

For several years now we've been talking about not 'buying' into the capitalistic view of Christmas shopping. Two years ago my dad's family decided we would only exchange handmade or second hand gifts and it went pretty well. There is also the idea of the $100 Christmas. We've even considered The Compact.

So, I came upon this option. Making a public pledge would make it more real. I haven't done much, if any, Christmas shopping yet so this is the time to take the plunge if I'm going to.

I think we will do the $100 Christmas, but we usually don't go crazy and for kids under 2, they don't really care.
Now if I had an 11 year old...it may be a bit harder to pull off, but of all these options, if anyone call pull it off, it would be you!

Wow...these are some neat ideas for Christmas. About the "tag"--You just have to tell any six things about yourself--not necessarily following my format.

We can do under $100 for our family, but it is the extended family that kills us, we draw names and end up needing to give to 4 more adults and 6 kids, and add in the in-laws. It is very difficult to make homemade gifts for men, who make up the majority of our list. I think it is a little rediculous that I will spend more money on other peoples kids than my own.

Yeah, once my uncle knitted a scarf for cje that had his name in it. It didn't go over so well.

I do a lot of flashlights and thermometers and work gloves when it comes to men in my family.

We usually do all books for Carlton's family since we can order them on Amazon.uk and have them wrapped and shipped with out even seeing them.

Also, we have done names in cje's family by couple now that all the kids are married, and we can do couple/household type gifts, which are way easier.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
I'm a HUGE fan of Etsy.com - I've already purchased two Christmas gifts today! It's handmade stuff for the most part, and it's fairly cheap since you're buying direct from the seller. I'm also perusing craftster.org to try and find out the best el cheapo tote bags that will stand up to iron-on transfers to make Christmas gifts for a few assorted folks. If you can spend just a few bucks up front, or salvage some stuff from what you have, you can do really fun gifts.
In my family, we just exchange names for adults (and we rotate through a list each year) so that we only have one other couple to buy for, which simplifies things a lot.
Tis the season, eh?
